Great Egret oil 36 x 48

I have just finished this Great Egret, which I saw in Costa Rica last year. This is one of a series of birds in flight. Next up "White Ibises". It was Interesting to think about the negative space. I love to paint birds in flight. I was asked to add a preparatory sketch, hence the scribble!

Fabulous, I just love it! One day hopefully I will be able to afford one of these :) (Yes, I know some are available as prints but nothing holds a candle to your originals.) Can't wait to see the others in the new bird series. Any chance of photos of a 'work in progress' with any of these - tips on what colours you use would also be great. Thanks so much for posting your work. Lesley

Dear Leslie, what a great reaction. You have made my day. I didn't take any "in progress snaps of this piece, but I did a preminilary sketch, ( I do with all my paintings)which I will post. I should warn you my sketches are so crude they my portraits look sophisticated!

Well, it's a very nice scribble!

Matthew, apart from the bleeding obvious, the difference between your preparatory sketch and the finished work are in details like the upturned end of the wing. I'd love to know whether you rely on direct observations, your own reference photos or other resources when it comes time to complete your larger works in the studio.
